A fun way for primary schools to promote wide reading

is a promotional tool to enthuse, amuse and encourage pupils in Years 1-3 to explore a wide range of texts.

‘Reading widely and often increases pupils’ vocabulary because they encounter words they would rarely hear or use in everyday speech. Reading also feeds pupils’ imagination and opens up a treasure-house of wonder and joy for curious young minds.’
DfES Draft National Curriculum 2014

With Ready, steady, read children will experience different genres and begin to develop personal reading tastes. They will be expected to participate in discussion about the stories, poems and other texts, and share with other pupils by reading aloud.

Eye-catching ‘trackers’ inspire and challenge pupils to read more adventurously, experiment with new genres and styles of writing, but with the support of age-related lists of selected quality texts.
